IR2 Venus nightside image acquired at 100,000 km away from Venus (2.26 µm)

The nightside view of Venus imaged by IR2 at a distance of 0.1 million km. This is to date the most detailed global view of the nightside disk. At 2.26 µm, spatially-inhomogeneous clouds appear as silhouette back-illuminated by thermal radiation from the hot lower atmosphere. Such images, combined with other cameras' data, will be used to study the 3D structure and dynamics of Venus atmosphere.
